EXAMPLE OF REMOTE ADOPTION

Father Claudio sent us details of some of the young people he's helping and that we, too, might help through the project of 'remote adoption'.

ISAIDA C.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single mother of a 8-month son
Date of birth: 05/05/84 in Bororoma
Parents: father Jose Camilo living in Estima, mother Antonia Magajo (was born in Bororoma and died in 1992).
Story: The father, after his wife died, married another woman and went to Estima leaving the three daughters from the first wife abandoned.
Isaida, who is the younger, is presently living with the two sisters. All of them have a child and were deserted by the father of the baby.
Isaida tried to react to her misfortune and - although she's a mother - is now studying. She is helped by her sisters who work in the fields.
She got the baby from a boy from a different district who had promised to marry her, but disappeared as soon as he knew she was pregnant.
What does she need? The financial support to enable her to complete the next two years amounting to 250$ per year.
Note: Isaida means to complete 10ª grade in order to be able to start a training course as nurse.
Apart for the fact of having been seduced, she is a good and determined girl. Five years of study separate her from economic independence. I believe she is worth helping.

EDUARDO M.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 18/03/84 in Chiuta
Parents: father Manteiga, mother Cristina.
Story: 6 siblings, 2 of which still childrean are living at home, 2 sisters are married and living away, 1 married brother lives nearby
Education: 2001 1st grade of the course in agricultural techniques fostered by Father João.
2002 2nd grade of the course in agricultural techniques. Not passed. Supported by Father João.
2003 repeats 2nd grade of the course in agricultural techniques with the support of Father Claudio.
What does he need? Expenses (in Meticais) for the term 2003-2004, including residence for 10 months: 2.000.000 + taxes 450.000 = Total.in Mt. 2.450.000
Corresponding to some 120$ per year.
Note: Eduardo agreed that, should he not pass at the end of the year he will not be supported any longer.

ACACIO J.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 02/023/80 in Manje
Parents: father João, mother Maria.
Story: 6 siblings: 2 orphaned sons from the first husband of the mother
4 children from the current husband (step father)
Acacio is son of Maria's dead husband. He's studing (3rd grade) agricultural techniques in Boroma
The step father is not supporting the sons of the first husband.
Education: 2001-2003 he studied agricultural techniques in Boroma supported by Father João.
2003- 2004 Father Claudio took up his assistance.
What does he need? Expenses (in Meticais) for the term 2003-2004, including residence for 10 months: 2.000.000 + taxes 450.000 = Total.in Mt. 2.450.000
Corresponding to some 120$ per year.

ANATERCIA A.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single mother of a 8-months baby
Date of birth: 23/04/83 in Bororoma
Parents: father Escrivão died during the war, mother Lucia A. sick with TBC.
Story: 3 siblings, including a married sister, living in Songo.
Anatercia together with a 12-year brother (4th grader), is living with her mother in Boroma.
Thanks to the support of Father João, Anatercia could complete her first 3 years of high school; we now wish to help her take high school degree.
The girl is now a 9th grader in Xangare, some 120 km from Boroma and therefore she cannot take care of her mother. In order to complete high school, she still needs to study another 3 years.
What does she need? Year 2003 - support for her mother 250$ - support for Anatercia 200 $
Note: In this specific case we are trying to support also the mother who is badly ill and has no earnings of her own.

CARLOS JOSÈ B.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 20/08/83 in Xangara
Parents: father Josè B died in war in 1985, mother Rosa T.
Story: From the first marriage 6 children were born.
The widowed mother got a new husband.
Two of the six offsprings married and now live far away. One sister is a single mother, studies in Tete and lives at an aunt's (sister of the father), together with a 19-year-old sister, who is a 9th grader in Tete.
Another sister, 15 years old, is working as maid.
Carlos has been living with his grandma Bakalhane Chipoze from 1986 until 1996.
In 1996 the grandma died, so he went at the aunt's in Tete. He lived there until 1999 when his aunt's husband died in an accident at work.
His poor aunt could no longer support both her children and those of her brother.
So Carlos went to the orphanage of Sr.Freitas, who support his education in Boroma.
Carlos is going to complete his third year in agricultural techniques in Boroma and now Father Claudio is helping him.
After completing the third year, he would like to specialise in agriculture in Chimoio where a school offers a 3-year training course.
What does he need? Carlos has still to study in Boroma for one year and a half. Forecasted expenses are 140$. Then, if he passes, he will need financial supports to continue studying.
Note: Usually when a widowed mother marries againg, the new husband does not take care of the offsprings of the previous marriage, who are considered as part of the family of the deceased father.

HENRIQUES P.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 30/10/86 in Songo
Parents: Henrique Horacio divorced in 1985 leaving his wife pregnant. He died of illness in 1989. The second wife, widowed, got two children.
Story: From the first marriage 6 children were born.
The divorced mother got married again and now lives with the second husband.
The widowed wife Cecilia S. in Songo is 42 years old. She has two children; Pires e Anapaula Henriques aged 23, who is now married and lives with her husband in Estima.
Pires's mother married again with Domingos C. and got another daughter, Gilda Comingos C. aged 10 (2003).
The step father, who already had three wifes and many children does not care about the step son Pires. He just supports his own offsprings.
The step father Domingo C., born in Chicoa, has now 4 wives and 30 children.
Chidren belong to the family of the del father, even thou this dies. The step father is not supposed to support them.
Pires has studied in Estima for 3 years and is now beginning studying agricultural techniques. When he studied in Estima he was living at his aunt's so he had to journey 19 km each day to go to and from school and he could eat something only at dinner time.
What does he need? For the first year - August 2003 to August 2004 - expenses will amount to 2.680.000 Mt , i.e. some 130 $.

EUSEBIO J. J.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 27/04/81 in Boroma
Parents:The father, Chico Joào Ntota, died during the war in Sena in 1984.
The widowed mother, Vitoria G. C., re-married with Josè J. in 1986.
Story: The widowed mother of Eusebio is now living alone since the second husband deserted her for another woman. She lives with two children from the first husband, Eusebio and Celeste aged 15.
Eusebio, as a child, got paralysed and now walks with some difficulty.
Since documents reported by mistake the name of the step father he could get no financial support for his education.
His mother, deserted by the second husband, is working in the fields but does not earn enough money to sustain her children.
Eusebio started studying as accountant but had to give up for lack of money.
He would like to resume his studies in order to be able to get a job.
What does he need? For studying in Tete he needs 480 $ per year.

STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY BEING SUPPORTED:

QUINTINO E.M.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 1976
Parents: The father, Elias, is blind, the mother is Marara.
Story: Quintino has two brothers, one of which suffers from epileptic fits and the other has psychological disorders.
He completed high school in Songo thanks to the help of he missionaries.
Afterwards he has been working as teacher until 2001
The then carried on activities for university education in Tete
He submitted a request to the faculty of Economics and Management at Catholica University in Beira.
He attended his first year there in 2002.
He has been helped in his first year at university by Father Claudio and by Combonian Missionaries with an amount of 1500 $
Expenses for the second year are forecasted at 1700 $.
What does he need? He has no earnings. In Beira he has to pay the rent of a room, University fees, food and apparel for an amount of 1700 $ US a year.

JACINTO O. C.
Nationality: Mozambiquan
Condition: single
Date of birth: 1977
Parents: Father Osmane C., Mother Christina.
Story: During the war, as a child, he was taken prisoner by RENAMO troops and kept in captivity for 4 years.
He flee from the RRNAMO prisoner camp, by crossing Zambezi river 'on board' of a banana tree.
After a series of adventures he reached Tete where he was helped by the missionaries, especially Father Claudio.
His father died in the meantime and he now has a brother and a sister living at some 600 km from Tete.
In 1999 he completed high school and was ready to start studying at University.
He has been supported by Father Claudio since he is such a capable and determined boy.
In 2001 he enrolled at the Pedagogy Institute in Angonia and completed the course in 2002, getting a specialisation in Portuguese teaching methodology.
In 2003 he started teaching at the Industrial School in Matundo (Tete).
He wishes to continue studying at the Faculty of Economics and Management in Beira.
He masters the following languages: Portuguese (written and spoken) fluently, English (written and spoken) reasonably, Cisena (written and spoken) fluently, Nyanja (written and spoken) fluently, Cinyungwe (spoken) fluently.
Until now he was awarded 2000 $US to carry on his studies.
If he enters University he will have to give up his present job in Tete.
He his worth the help he requires to keep on studying.
What does he need? A year at the Catholic University in Beira costs some 1700 $
